Yes they are soldered, I remember changing a few on a 15 back when I had 
the dexterity of a 20 year old.  There's even a jig for that in the tool 
kit documentation IIRC.  Otherwise it's one of those tasks that takes 3 
hands or some tricks to hold things where you want them.

I don't really see anything wrong with Paul's printing other than the 
need for cleaning and using a less juicy ribbon.  I remember the purple 
ribbons I borrowed from the news room came close to having excessive ink 
when you first installed them.  If your pallets were dirty you would get 
the effect you see in Paul's example.

Personally I see no need for chemicals, only a stiff brush unless the 
stuff is really stuck on.  Tooth pick for stubborn stuff in the 
cavities.  Yes, chemicals would make them shiny,pretty like new, but how 
long will that last?  A few weeks?
