Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread, but I just came across this and
wanted to weigh in; the Model 28 answerback mechanism is detailed in
this video (and the other videos in its series):

It is a separate unit that mounts in front of the typing unit on the
top of the keyboard unit, and is triggered either by contacts in the
stunt box or by a contact under a HERE IS key on the keyboard. My
Model 28 is TWX, not Telex, so the WRU is on Figs C, not Figs D, but
you can see the keyboard in this video as well.
I hope that's interesting to someone.
