Photoelectric tape reader reminds me of the punched tape reader a friend
had for his Imsai computer. The reader had 9 photodetectors, the 8 bits
plus the feed hole. The feed hole is typically smaller than the data
holes, so it provides a strobe pulse in the middle of the data pulses.
You'd pull the tape through by hand. I always thought that was very
clever.
