The name Motorola has an interesting history.  I think it's first use 
was by a company that made electric winders for spring driven 
phonographs- a MOTOR to wind your victrOLA.  Later, Galvin manufacturing 
Co.   sold entertainment radios, especially for cars, labeled "Motorola, 
a product of Galvin Manufacturing Co."  I do believe the name was 
changed in 1947.  Here in Syracuse,  home of General Electric's 
Electronics Park,  to call the low frequency tone squelch anything other 
than "Channel Guard" could provoke a ribbing.
