[GreenKeys] Your mileage may vary- i-Telex vs actual Telex prepared model 32 or 33

Hi Mark,

#1 - It's been a while since the Telex network was operational in North
America, it shut down sometime around 1990, so the customer machines have
really scattered. I do see reports, from time to time, via this Greenkeys
group of Model 32 ASR machines with a rotary dial available on one of the
Internet based marketplaces. So, maybe you will be lucky.

#2 - Please go here and see what is needed -
https://www.i-telex.net/hardware/

You will need a power supply board - there are two versions. The more
expensive board contains a test generator which can be very handy in
setting up and maintaining a teleprinter.

You will need an i-Telex board - this required a hardwired - RJ45 -
Internet connection.

You will need a TW39 Board - there are two versions. If you find a
complete Model 32ASR with the call control unit, you can use the TW39
Normal. If you want to have the flexibility to also use a PC with the TW39
emulating a teleprinter, then get the TW39 Special. There is no price
difference.

You will need a backplane.

You will also need an isolation transformer to convert 120 VAC line voltage
to 15VAC. The one that I used is this one from Newark -
https://www.newark.com/block/fld-4-15/transformer-iso-30vac-4va/dp/53X8531
for $6.45 plus shipping.

Finally you will need an enclosure to house these components. Go here to
see some construction examples - https://www.i-telex.net/aufbaubeispiele/
 One recommended source for the
enclosure is here -
https://www.reichelt.de/systemgehaeuse-geh-sg-1-10-p50437.html?GROUPID=3363&OFFSET=16&&r=1

Total cost for the i-Telex boards, depending on the options selected, is
190 euro or about $215. The enclosure and the isolation transformer are
extra above this cost.

#3 The i-Telex network is a fantastic recreation of the long gone
International Telex business to business network that started in the early
1930s and came to an end because of advances such as FAX (you could send
images) and e-mail (you could attach images and files). If you like
teleprinters, you will find an international group of friends with a
similar interest.

See this recent list of i-Telex forum members -

#4 - I don't have experience here and suggest that another Greenkeys member
please comment.
