Sorry to get into this, and I'm sure I'll shortly be even sorrier, but..

USPS is actually VERY cheap for very small packages, thanks to 1rst class
package mail.  $4.30 to get 13oz or less across the country.  And then
there's Media Rate, if you're sending books or manuals--absurdly cheap
compared to other commercial services!

You don't need to go to the post office.. just open a (free) account at
stamps.com.  USPS tracking works ok..  nobody's tracking is perfect.  And,
the really great thing:  just apply the printed label, put it in your
mailbox, and it's gone!
