[GreenKeys] GreenKeys Digest, Vol 197, Issue 1

I was a tty installer/repairman for ma bell during the Detroit riots in 67. Spent four days on site at Detroit police headquarters downtown during the riots. The dispatchers were not yet trained on the 28 asr machines and beta testing them on the LEIN network hadn't taken place yet. Had a front seat for the whole thing from the 6th floor headquarters. Don't ever ,ever ,ever, believe the numbers of dead reported to the media. Army General Throckmorton from the airborne division put down the rioters with tanks and twin 50 cal Jeep mounted weapons. Google the report and get an idea of the insurrection. The machines provided valuable information that contributed to the rapid quelling of the rioters. Many snipers shot at the fireman's hoses while firemen actively tried their best to do their jobs. The General put and end to that problem quickly. Governor Romney initially sent the Mich National Guard to help control the rioters. Big joke as they, guardsmen ,were never issued ammunition for their rifles. It wasn't until the President sent Federal troops to Detroit that any change took place. Btw the 28 asr machines performed flawlessly in police communications. There were 6 comm positions clacking away at I recall, 100 wpm. Finally got to return home the day before my birthday to clean clothes and a much needed shower. This could be titled "Teletype to the rescue". Rick K8 PJQ
