Got the answer... should have looked more closely into TM11-352 (page 146).

Sure enough, you need to remove the typebar guide from the ribbon oscillator. That allows the typebar to lean back enough to disengage from the pull bar. Then the typebar just slides out. 

Then, the manual says, 

“Replace the new typebar in the type segment, and engage the the pull bar so that the pull bar is even with the other pull bars when the typebar is in the rest position.” A bit of black magic needed there, but once you know the trick it’s easy.

No need to loosen the curved rod.
