I've removed and reinstalled the plate twice; it was certainly a
frustrating process, but I found that I was able to rotate the plate
down in one direction or the other (top-row-first or bottom-row-first)
and insert the keys across the row one at a time; after rotating a
tiny bit further they would be trapped enough to stay put while I did
the next row.  It took a couple of tries, but it worked.

I'd be happy to try something like upside-down next time, though, if
it's easier.
