In a word, curiosilty.
Became an SWL at a very young age (5 or 6). Listened to everything including
Amateur bands and many odd signals I couldn't identify. Eventually by 13 got
my ham license but still enjoyed listening to the SW bands and those odd signals.
At 16 got my first job in electronics at a 'two-way/repair everything' shop and
there were many hams there that became very good friends. One was into
RTTY and introduced me to what was to become a life long obsession. He
sold me my first machine, a Teletype 2B. Spent countless hours cutting
3/8" tape because none was available but was able to copy API, UPI, TASS
and many other foreign news services with home brew TU's. Nirvana and now I knew what those
odd signals were (including FAX and even Hellscriber). Bought my first
m15 when in college that had been used by a deaf person. WOW!
The m15 is still my fave and can seemingly field strip one with eyes closed.
Also ran RTTY on 6-meters AM using Heath lunch boxes locally.
Often passing messages to and from Vietnam.
Got into glass RTTY with an ADM-3 and (stupidly) gave away two
m15's and an m19 which got tossed. After retirement decided to see
if there was any RTTY activity then started the search for the old mechanical
wonders, now numbering a dozen or so now. Mostly listen to iTTY now
which is close to those days as a youngster crusin' the SW bands for
foreign news broadcasts.
