I also ran REAL RTTY in the 1960s and 1970s. I had a model 15, a 14 TD,
and a 14 typing reperf. The transmitter was a Viking Ranger. The receiver
was a National NC-300. The TU was a home made vacuum tube unit with 88 mH
telephone loading coils used in the LC filters. The loop was keyed with a
6L6. I'm now working on bringing up my model 15. I got a loop supply from
Mr. Rtty. Just ordered things like line cords, fuse holder, fuses, current
limit resistor, etc. I'll get it working locally, then start on a TU.
Since I do microcontroller stuff for work, I'm looking at building a TU
using a software based direct digital synthesis FSK generator and Goertzel
algorithm filters for the demodulator. I'll let the microcontroller
emulate the punched tape equipment. Only so much room in the shack!
I'm lucky in that I can have an HF station on the air at home. I was
running 1 kW CW last night on 40 meter CW. Depending on what direction the
antenna is pointing, it can shut down our DSL. It also trips the bathroom
GCFI and sometimes opens the garage door. I've added a bunch of ferrites
in front of and behind the GCFI, but so far it still trips. Not a super
serious issue. Just gotta remember to reset it and check the garage door!
For those that cannot do HF, I wonder about using
http://remotehamradio.com . I've used it when traveling (did some CW from
an Amtrak train last month). You COULD connect your TU to a computer that
is connected to RHR. Or, use the Flex Maestro (
https://www.flexradio.com/maestro/ ) that can directly drive RHR.
I look forward to talking with all of you on HF when I finish getting my
model 15 and stuff running!
