Personally I prefer the blinking lights and/or cross hairs of the TUs vs a silent board, but either works and I use both.
If your TU does not have a motor control, keep an eye out for something called an Idle Line Motor Control. They come up on eBay from time to time. Perhaps someone in this list has an extra.
