Hey folks. I got an email at gil at baudot.net from a lovely gentleman who said he had cracked into my mail system and operating system, had planted a key logger, was taking video of me via my webcam as I watched naughty stuff, and all sorts of alarming things.
He said he could tell that I had read it since I opened the attached image (a scan of his rant) -- this is true. I have image loading turned off in my email, and normally dont open images except from trusted senders. But he sent this email with my address in the from field, so he indeed tricked me into opening the image (I often email things to myself).
Oh my. But he was generous enough to make it all go away if I sent him $1000 in Bitcoin.
Hmm. He didn't have control of my email. There was no OS to hack since I use a webmail service and I use a disposable Chromebook for most browsing.
Yes, it was just a scare tactic, like the folks who call and pose as a grandkid in trouble to shake you down for money.
I just want to point out that all of our email addresses are easily available in the greenkeys archive, so if you get something like this, they did not 'hack' your system.
Crazy world we live in now.
Gil
