Greetings Greenkeyers --
A big *Thank You* to Jerry Murphy, Nick England and others who provided
insight and guidance on the undesired operation of my 28 RO due the the
stunt box "helping" on certain character sequences, and how to correct
those problems.
Given that my 28 RO seems to have been cobbled together from parts, it may
have been that some of my stunt box features were of particular value and
utility for that prior application. Yet, for my use of this 28 RO the
characters #, " and & had special meaning via the stunt box that caused
extra line feeds, vertical tabs and horizontal tabs. It seems that each of
those characters occasionally appear in the ITTY feed. I've now defeated
those operations by wiring-up the pawls on the associated stunt box slots.
Unwanted operations solved.
Next, as TTY newbie, I wondered why, with those offending pawls now
defeated, that I wasn't able to print #, " and &. Of course you know the
answer but it took me about 20 minutes to figure it you. Yes, eventually I
figured out that #, " and & were not present in my type box.
I see from this document
http://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/tty/typebox-code.pdf on Nick's website
that it looks like I need the following type pieces to add to my type box
(what's the correct term for these things that get whacked against the
ribbon to make a printed character?):
p/n 157638 typepiece " double-quote
p/n 157659 typeiece # pound sign
p/n 157639 typepiece & ampersand
Adding type pieces to the typebox brings up the question of springs for the
type pieces. Do I need a spring for each additional type piece? Does
anyone have the part number for that spring?
Another question I have is regarding slashed zeros. Again I see from the
typebox-code.pdf file that the part number for the slashed zero is:
p/n 157635 typepiece slashed zero
With respect to the slashed zero, my 28 RO does not have a slashed zero;
it's simply a conventional zero, a little skinnier than a capital O. My 28
RO appears to have originally been a Bell System device (or at least the
typing unit was originally a Bell System device based on the model number
of the typing unit). I also know that my Bell System 15 does not have a
slashed zero. Did the military version of the 28 commonly make use of a
conventional zero or a slashed zero? Were there other categories of users
that also had slashed zeros on their TTYs instead of conventional zeros?
Thanks again to everyone on this list for your help.
