Robert, the procedure you describe is exactly
what was done to 'erase' errors in punching the
tape EXCEPT that you didn't punch 'blanks' because
a blank is NO holes punched ... to erase errors, the
tape was backed up and repunched with LETTERS
which punches ALL five holes and results in no
character being printed when the tape is run.
