[GreenKeys] Teletypes and Text messages

Jordan, Steve:

When you are connected to the internet, what types of messages are you able to get and print on the teletypes? Are you able to get any live news feeds or streams? I would like to do this, but the only sources of live news I see are internet RTTY type streams that need an audio demodulator and converter to get them ready to print on a TTY. (I see you are using Rasberry Pi to do the conversion.)

Yes Bruce there is! I use it all the time. It is John Nagle’s BaudotRSS software. There is more to it than just running the software, as you have to have a server somewhere to handle the SMS traffic. It is not trivial to set up, but I got it done, so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to get it going. I use Twilio for my phone number and SMS messaging (costs $1.00 per month for the phone number and just fractions of a cent for each message handled.) And for the server I use a cloud server from Digital Ocean, it costs me $5.00 per month, but I use it for other things as well. I’ve been using this for several years now and it is quite a hit with those young and old at shows where I demo the machine. My display is referred to as “A Marriage of Old and New Technology, The Original Text Machines.”

I see that Jordan has replied as well, so as in anything there is more than one way to skin a cat!

I may be asking about something long ago solved, but is there any software or hardware that allows incoming text messages on a phone to start up and print out on a teleprinter, and better yet, to be responded to with the keyboard?
