[GreenKeys] Printing Selectric

In the late 70's/early 80's, a buddy of mine had a pair of computer printer Selectrics (I don't think they were 2741's - I found that model on youtube, and it looks more "computerish" - my buddy's units looked like a plain Selectric) that he'd rescued from a dumpster. IIRC, it used an 8-bit "parallel" - actually you had to drive 8 solenoids - interface and it had an EBCDIC type ball - I seem to recall that regular Selectric type balls didn't fit his machine, which was a drag. He had it working with his COSMAC Elf. I pinged him to see if he still has one that he'd be willing to part with for the OP.

I know you probably want the real thing (I would prefer the real thing this over this), but if you wanted to do some serious DIY work, you could convert a regular Selectric like this guy did: https://hackaday.com/2012/06/13/turning-an-ibm-selectric-into-a-printer/
Probably much slower printing speed than the real thing, too. Based on the videos he has, maybe 3-4 characters per second maximum for whitespace, 1-2 CPS when actually printing?
Anyway, good luck.

Andy, Most of the Selectrics that pop up are just the normal typewriter. These are purely mechanical beasts and so not easily converted to use with a computer or even Modem. The ones with electrical connections are usually referred to as “I/O Selectrics” and then have solenoids and switch to allow them to be operated electrically. The IBM model number was the 2741, but there were also Mag Card and mag Tape Selectrics which can be adapted to use with a computer/modem. IBM provided adaptors for these. The “Electronic Composer” which was designed for typesetting also has an IO interface, but it has proportional spacing so perhaps not as useful. There are also modified units about that were adapted for use in Word Processors and similar machines. I have owned a Mag Card and an Electronic Composer and now have am IO Selectric but it needs a lot of work to get it working.
