[GreenKeys] Extra transformer out there?

Hi Eric and everyone,

The resistor is what's called a bleeder resistor. Its function is to discharge the circuit when the AC input power is removed. Otherwise, the capacitor might retain its charge and possible shock you. I would leave it in the circuit.

Hi all,

Safe to say, I’m not using that little transformer anymore. I was looking at the bottom and noticed an extra resistor on the capacitor (extra, when comparing it to the actual diagram of the transformer - both attached). I know a few said that when they tried the little 28 transformer on the 19, they couldn’t get anything out of the tape punch. Embarrassingly, I admit... even though I’m a ham radio operator, I’m not an electrical engineer - I’m a geographer ;p . Could this resistor make a slight bit of a difference on making the tape punch punch like it does? I haven’t measured the component - to make sure it’s a resistor for sure and not an inductor, but it certainly looks like a resistor to me (2.2K ohms).

Sincerely,
Eric :)

Teletype made a transformer for Model 28 service that was about three times as tall as the
one in the photo. It was rated at 500ma. I suspect that the capacitor was a bit larger,
also.

I had one years back, and never used it. I must have 'horse-traded' it at some point.

THAT one could have probably handled the punch and loop on the Model 19 and still run cool.
I would be very reluctant to put one of the 100 ma units in that service.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Eric & Steve,

I’ve tested it, it does… if it runs off the power supply all by itself :) . The problem I’m running into is that when both the perforator and typing units are connected to the power supply, it ~mostly~ works. The drawback is that the meter doesn’t have enough power to do the counting when the switch is selected to keyboard/perforator. It does punch and type at the same time, though, when the switch is that position. So what I was hoping to do was to have one-each of these power supplies (two total - I already have one), connected independently to each unit (perforator and typing unit), so that each is powered independently. On ebay, they’re asking (after an offer) for $45 + shipping. Yikes @o@; !!!~

Sincerely,
Eric :)

Interesting - maybe there are different versions of either that power supply or the
M19 punch, or both.

Before I restored the original REC-30 power box in my M19, I tried using that same
supply (or what looks just like it) from my M28 and it didn't work. It was enough to
twitch slightly and you could hear a slight tap when current was applied, but it
didn't come close to even hitting the paper, much less perforating it.

I don't power it up often because i now use a solid-state 120VDC supply, but the
M19's original REC-30 thyratron based power supply will run several loops as well as
the punch, and provides a light show at the same time:

I was getting to say the same thing Eric just posted. Those supplies weren't designed to run a punch like on the M19. Just light duty on M28s.

You need a hefty supply, similar to the original supplies that came with the M19.

I'm not sure I understand your plans but I'm pretty sure those transformer/loop supply modules won't produce enough current to run the perforator on a model 19. (if it's the same as the identical-looking one in my 28) That big M19 punch solenoid draws a lot of current.

Group,

Does anyone have an extra Teletype (transformer) power supply out there, by chance?... like the one in the attached photo? I need one more, in order to run both the typing unit and perforator (at the same time) on my 19. There are currently two on ebay, but they are asking for way to much :/ . Not sure if anyone has an extra they would be willing to part with - and even at a reasonable price, if requested (unlike ebay >< )... so close to having her done ;D .

Thanks much all!

Sincerely,
Eric :)
