Oh I just noticed this other part -- if you set the selector lever to KEYB & TAPE, I don't
think the character counter is meant to operate; at least it doesn't on mine. I thought the
whole point of it was to let you know when to punch CR/LF if you were typing directly to
tape and couldn't see what you were typing.  

If your keystrokes are getting printed to the page as well presumably you don't need the
position counter  since you can already see when you're near the paper edge.  When I get 
home I'll go look in the documentation and see if this is in fact how it's supposed to work.
