Well.  Color me stupid.  The schematic even says 120 V D.C., but for
some reason that just didn't register!  There's no label on my unit
(it's either missing, or it's been repainted, or something -- who
knows, in up to nearly 100 years!), and it has a regular two-prong
line cord, so I assumed it ran on 60 Hz 120 VAC -- which is a foolish
assumption, in retrospect, as old as the design is.

Well, if the supply isn't supposed to limit the current, it's about
750 mA.  Which is a honker of a 120 VDC supply.  I'll have to see what
I can scrounge up around here...
