Jordan,
Seeing the picture of your son and his "stash" makes me grin hugely.
I was a mere tyke of four when I was introduced to the majestic noise
of a herd of 15 RO machines busily printing away, thanks to my father
taking me
to work with him. As I grew, and as was "age-appropriate", I became a
paper and ribbon jockey and even learned little tidbits of maintenance on
these wonderful old machines. Much to the amusement of co-workers, I
demonstrated a "stick-to-it-iveness" that bordered on hilarious at times.
Ten years ago I met a former co-worker of my father- and was greeted by
my old nickname- "Little Tom". Between his son Paul and me, we kept that
data moving! Literally! We visited for nearly two hours as time melted away,
and I got a call from his son the next day. Enjoy these moments. Count them
as your greatest treasure. In the words of Bob Seger's "Travelin' Man":
"Those are the memories that make me a wealthy soul"
In order to grow to be a mighty Warrior, your son must learn about the
under-table ballast lamps that warm
the knees of the Vintage Operators and reigns terror in the hearts and
blindness to the eyes of the evil
lurking Teletype spiders! Inculcate this wisdom in your son well, speak of
it often and dear that he may pass this masterful art and treasured
knowledge on to his sons! God bless, my friend, and thanks for triggering
my memory to remember these things! May the days of shared youth with your
son be many and joyful, seasoned heartily with laughter and smiles no
matter what mere weather assails us with!
A former little boy, myself...
