Hi
If by chance you *do* have com gear and nothing to do while waiting for
the missile to arrive, it’s time to unplug it all and wrap it in aluminum foil.
Then put it in a nice padded box where it will not be damaged by rock and roll.
If by chance you suspect you would be busy in the very few minutes between
a real warning and the event, your gear would have to be stowed ahead
of time. While you might say that this only applies to solid state stuff …. maybe
not so much ….
If you are tempted to have a “backup link” to verify alerts, who would you call /
who would you ask? The only people with answers are in a bunker somewhere
looking at a radar screen. It is pretty doubtful that they will be able to chat on
the (public) radio at that time.
Emergency com after the fact - sure, there is a lot that can be done that way.
It is a valuable thing to plan for and to set up for. The key element often ignored
is it also is something to *train* for. If you spent any time on the air back on 9/11,
it became very obvious very quickly that there was more gear available than
people who had been trained in emergency net protocols …. Yes, it is a really
boring thing to get out and do on a regular basis. That’s why so few do it. Typing
emails about it is *lots* more fun. (and yes I’m pointing right at myself in this case).
