[GreenKeys] Teletype stepper switcher

On eBay right now there is a Teletype #173576 Steper Switch Automatic Electric Type 45 -PW80084 up for auction. The listing number is 322983194979. 

How would this have been used with teletypes? Was it used in the automatic switching centers to automatically forward messages on to the next or desired end station? Did the teletypes have capability to drive switches like this? Was it something driven by stunt boxes?
