Yes and apparently MITE and Teletype were competing for a Navy contract.
MITE was chosen and the work Teletype had done eventually turned into the
Model 32/33 line. G. E. White published an article with quite a bit
of dirt on the MITE - apparently the company tried through their senator
to get a no-bid contract, and that failing managed to win the competition
with Teletype. Wonder how much the MITE machines cost us taxpayers.

MITE has always been something of a mystery to me because the man who
got all the patents, Bernard Howard, seems to have bounced around in the
military-aerospace biz but had never been in teleprinter work before,
nor since.
