Hi all!
It never ceases to amaze me what shows up on GK's...
While I was clicking on the link to the RTTY story/poem,
which was very interesting, I was led to the pages of a long
unseen issue of the RTTY Journal...
On page 6, the "Holy Grail" of all beginner "Simple"
TU's, the one-tube 5763, graced the page in all it's
glory!
I remember seeing this very article, and built this TU
from junk box parts...
I was able to grab a bunch of used 5763's from carrier
equipment at work, and as the tubes wud weaken with
use, wud simply swap it out for a spare...
The trick for maximum performance was to use a 5763
with the best emission possible...
A friend of mine around that time, had a Lorenz LO15
he had bought from an embassy in Toronto, and although
quite interested in ham radio, he was not knowledgeable
about the machine itself...
Anyways, we teamed up and copied a lot of RTTY
traffic with that little TU...
For what it was, it was an amazingly good little TU,
and if your signal was reasonably strong and QRM free,
It copied traffic quite well...
This was back in 1970, and there was lots of commercial
RTTY activity on the air...
Sadly, not today, times have changed and not much RTTY
Traffic (Commercial), is out there to copy...
Our first decoding was a sports broadcast in Spanish,
but no matter, victory was at hand, and I never forgot
the thrill of that very first message being received...
I still have that venerable 5763 TU, it is priceless to me
for all the good memories of RTTY operation...
Thanks for listening to my story...
A tip of the "Teletype hat" to Paul Wills for provding the link
to the article...
Cheers!
Ken
