     That's certainly a good point. While synthetic oil does not become 
degraded as far as lubricating properties go it still gets dirty. 
Machines like Teletypes probably do not subject the oil to the very high 
temperatures they get in auto engines so the formulation can be 
different but dirt is inevitable.
