[GreenKeys] Tape printer.

Hi Gang:
 
I recently acquired a Bell System 14 type bar tape printer.
 
While doing some cleaning and lubricating with my super secret oils  and 
greases, and reading thru the parts manual, I notice a couple of  different 
things about tape printers that confuse me and I'm looking for  clarification.
 
First: There was a option for using 2" tape. Anyone know what that was  for?
 
Second:  The Bell machines had the tape feed roller on the right side  of 
the platen and used 3/8" tape.
 
Third: The Western Union machines had the tape feed roller on the LEFT side 
 of the platen and used 5/16" tape.
 
Anyone want to venture a guess (or know) as to why the differences in the  
Bell and the WU tape sizes?
 
Is there any place offering 3/8" tape?
