I did a google search for automatic line feed and carriage return and
got a great many hits including three patents on the first two pages.
Evidently these mechanisms were quite widely used. Its possible they
have been disabled or removed in machines in the hands of hams. I am no
expert but have been interested in Teletype since I was in my teens so I
have collected a lot of half knowledge and have a good memory for this
sort of stuff.
