    Partly its because there is such a plethora of different types of 
screws and screw heads. In fact, you got me curious about the history of 
both Allen and Bristol head screws. Turns out the Allen head was 
invented by a fellow named Allen (what else?) and patented in 1911. The 
Bristol screw turns out to have been invented at just about the same 
time but by a fellow named Dwight S. Goodwin. He filed in 1911 and the 
patent was granted in 1913. The name Bristol comes from the company who 
made the screws and wrenches.  I had thought the Bristol screw was much 
newer than 1913 but evidently it isn't.  The patent would have expired 
in 1930. The Bristol company is still in business but doesn't seem to 
know much about its own history, not unusual these days.
    If you look up "screw heads" on Google you will find a great many 
variations including some pretty obscure ones.
