     Yours is an interesting story.  I have been aware of Z code for 
many years but never knew much about its origin.  I looked it up and 
found the Cable and Wireless Limited evidently began it but the C&W code 
is mostly different from the later NATO version.  I found a PDF listing

    Q code seems to have been originated in 1909 by the British 
government and was included in the international service regulatons in 
1912.  There is a pretty good article at:

    According to this the British Post Office Handbook for Radio 
Operators of 1970 had over 100 Q signals.
