Most ulilities in the USA are extremely reluctant to provide three phase
to single residences unless the customer is willing to pay thousands in
installation costs and agree to a signifigent minimum bill regardless of
the amount used. They will do this even if the three transformers are
already on the pole in front of your house feeding an apartment building
across the street. Many people needing or wanting elevators in their
homes or wanting to restore and install pipe organs have been seriously
discouraged because of these policies. Many air conditioners, larger
appliances, and residential elevators today have three phase motors
powered by inverters that convert single phase to three. Single phase AC
motors are less efficient- sometimes drastically- than a three phase.
Their windings are more complex, starting switches and condensors add
cost size and complexity, and they often will not start under load and
will be damaged by repeated attempts to start.
