[GreenKeys] ASR 33 motor buzzing

That makes sense. I figure I’ll try a better fuse first though, just in case. As mentioned the seller was able to turn it on and do a carriage return, which I assume would not be possible if the motor were experiencing the same problem there as here. Further, the fuses themselves were old and one or two had visible rust inside. In my imagining, maybe a weakened old fuse finally broke in transit or when I plugged it in, and my inability to get this thing started again has been due to using weak automotive fast blow fuses. Figure I might as well try going down that road a bit before I start taking things apart. I am mechanically inclined to some degree, but I would be lying if I said this machine doesn’t intimidate me just a little bit! :)

Brad,
If you're going to have to pull the motor to swap it anyway, why not pull it now and try running it on the bench - with only the minimum required components (relay, cap, etc.) and no load on the shaft? You can power it from a variac, and watch what the current does during start & run phases.
It will also give you a good opportunity to measure the resistance of the various motors windings, uninfluenced by the rest of the circuitry. I don't have a 33 motor, but I bet Wayne would be able to quote you some reference readings. If there's a bad or shorted winding, it should show up in a DC test - though not 100%.

Brad,
You may simply have a bad motor run capacitor. Check that there is one (I dont know but suspect there is) and replace it. If it is open (the likely failure mode) then the motor won't run.

Okay so I think I may have a dead motor on my hands. When I power my ASR on I hear a loud buzzing, and I can hear and feel it coming from the main motor. However if I manually turn the motor shaft (clockwise), everything in the Teletype seems to move as it should, it’s not seized. After a while it will blow the 2A fuse nearby.
Would that about be the right diagnosis? Can the motors be rebuilt?
If anyone else has any other suggestions on stuff I can try, I’d be most appreciative.
B
