Yes, I am definitely going to get under the hood of this fine machine... but just not today or the near future.
At the moment, I just need it for my demo at World Of Commodore in Toronto in 2 weeks.
I am loading Micro-soft's 4K Basic on the ALTAIR from papertape, always a blast to watch papertape go by.
I'll be honest (mostly with myself), I don't have a lot of free time, and my list of projects is long.
Besides the little projects in between, I have these following milestones:
-SWTPC to get working
-HP 9830 to get working
-Teletype Model 15 to clean and oil (carriage won't return, suspect it's just in need of a good clean & oil)
-Mechanical calculator
So, learning the insides of a working device, isn't high on my list, but I'm sure glad I know where to come for help when I need it.
Cheers,
Josh Bensadon

First, the tape punch:
Quite a few later model 33's had the remote tape ON and tape OFF function built in. Its controlled by the keyboard or distant end TTY or a computer. Cut the tape where it feeds into the tape punch and remove the small piece of tape from the punch. Reload the tape when you have finished the work.
Most of us TTY guys talk Mark and Space, not the way you expressed the code. We are just old timers and its easy to confuse us or me anyway.
The 33 uses ASCII code. I will attach a pic for you.
To stop the printing, there is a homemade function to do that, one I toggled up with a clothspin and one Mike Douglas improved on with metal parts. See all pics.
