I ended up getting the 'new' motor installed ok.. but with only a 3A fast
blow fuse it ran for only about a second before blowing. Slow blow fuses
should arrive tomorrow or Monday according to the mail.

And example of how some motors have odd "not intuitively obvious"
problems.
When I worked at Junior's Tools, one of the things I had to fix were the
small "oil less" compressors. They apparently, all had the same motors from
Italy regardless of who's name was on the label.
Typically, they had the main body, and two ends held together with long
bolts. Occasionally we would get one with the starting capacitor bad. But
almost always what was wrong was the ends were shifted in position. (The
feet were no long flat.) The quick test was to un-bolt the motor. If it
rocked on the work bench, loosen the ends and realign them.
That solved 99% of the "It blows the breaker" complaints.

Now the weird part about it was, there wasn't the slightest bit of binding
or stiffness to the motor when it was out of alignment, but it it was, the
motor would lock the rotor and blow the breaker.
