Doug, 

Yes, the most common 33 unit was the UCC-6. The DEC tape reader control was a good mod as long as it was installed correctly and most were. Very easy to defeat with one Molex wire change. You could remove the printer easily the same as without the reader control card. 

However, I have seen many other tape reader control units installed that look like spaghetti. Sometimes with no thought about removing the printer for work. They were hard wired with no connectors you could unplug.

I have DEC's documentation for the modifications they routinely made to teletypes that were sold for use with DEC computers. Nowhere does it say what call control unit is used, but the (very grainy) photos all show a UCC-6 as the base to which they added their reader-run relay. (They also document conversion of the TTY to operate on 220VAC, 50Hz.) 
Both of the model 33's I have access to, both of which were used with PDP-8 computers, definitely sport UCC-6 call-control units.
