The key adjustment for the universal lever involves a screw deep under the typing mechanism just to the back left of the X bar that links the universal lever to the push-bar going back to the distributor trip lever. This screw locks the pivot point of the bell-crank that translates rotation of the X bat to linear motion of the push-bar. With the screw loose, the pivot point can be moved slightly to the front or back in order to adjust the point in the motion of the rod where it trips the distributor or resets the keyboard.
There are a set of pry points in the cast metal base of the typing unit, and matching pry points in the bent metal support for the pivot point. With the screw just slightly loosened, you can use a wide-bladed screwdriver to pry the pivot point to the front or back. Move it just slightly, lock it down, and try another keypress and see what happens. Then move it again, repeat until the adjustment works correctly.
Another thing that could cause multiple cycles when you intended only one keypress is the repeat lever. This is one of the most obscure and baffling bits of linkage in the keyboard. It's a little tiny lever that prevents the universal lever from coming all the way back up, with a delightfully difficult to reassemble bit of springwork to operate it.
