Nick - the new version sounds softer on gear noise and also the on
power off cycle things spin longer too. I do remember hearing that the
shifter gears do not last as long as fixed space gears... I winder if that
is for real.. or they fort to grease them well!

I have a caracus base for a compact ro or a ?? that has a
different shifter. I do not know if all gears are metal in that.. I will have
to dig it out. Probably unless I get the rest or build a test fixture out
of it... it should probably go away some day.

It seems better to me - note FWIW - this is sitting on a formica desktop
supported by two filing cabinets - kind of a resonant structure.

Thanks to Ken, Rice, Tony, Tom, & Jack for helpful advice and
encouragement. What a great list this is!!!

I re-greased everything, and put in some backlash between motor pinion and
gearbox. The gearshift height adjusters had been replaced by some thick
washers, so I made up substitute adjusters. I also aligned the gearshift
selector via its eccentric so that the gears meshed more squarely.

Cheers,
