Simple Green is excellent, and generally very friendly to people and the
environment. The only downfall is that it's water-based, and as such,
requires the same drying / remediation as with any wet equipment.

As mentioned, napthas are usually OK for a lot of plastics (think Ronsonol,
Energine or Coleman lantern fuel) but normally you don't need to saturate
things. Just put a drop or two on each joint / pivot / bearing and let it
dissolve the crud.

I've also had very good luck with the (chlorinated, not the 'green'
stuff!!) automotive brake cleaner, or electric motor cleaner - like CRC
Lectramotive. Generally, it will not damage plastics - but don't dispense
it from the spray can. Spay some into a little vessel, and then precisely
drop it on with one of those red pipes that come with many spray solvents &
lubes or some other reasonable sub.
