of thread per inch (or 1/2 inch) should be 24 or 12  respectively. 

those wheels I  got  for my western union model 19  i just have the  ship
doc  here  with the size. this  shaft needs   finer threads  to  work.   

3/8-16 UNC  (course)
3/8-24 UNF (fine)
3/8-32 UNEF (extra fine)
