got it fixed. The problem is there are several interacting adjustments, starting with the drive linkage.
I did discover the support plate screw for the drive link was loose. Also had to reset the punch penetration.
However... It simply will not work (feed) when set up according to the manual!
If the drive link pry point is set far enough forward to meet the spec for the tape nudger clearance (which is the very first thing to set in the required sequence of adjustments),
then there is not enough range in the feed pawl adjustment to move the ratchet. it’s too far from the teeth.
So I ended up setting the feed pawl as close as it would go, then slowly backing off the drive link adjustment until it fed properly and consistently.
I think that’s what I did 10 years ago, from looking at the adjustments before I reset them to center per the manual.
Probably when the oil dried up a little, the marginal feed quit working.
Anyway it’s punching normally now, many feet of all-rubout tape later.

Charles,
After long storage, if it worked before, it should work now.
It does sound like a feed adjustment, but first lots of visual.

Thanks for the pics.
I’ve also noticed that some of the rows of rubout (all punched) characters are too close together, which can be seen in one or two places on the picture.
Not enough advance means either the feed pawl is adjusted too loosely, or something’s dragging on the tape and holding it back.
I read through the manuals again, Principles of Operation, Lubrication and Adjustments, and finally noticed there is a detent mechanism on the back side of the feed wheel ratchet (barely shown anywhere except the lubrication section).
Too much irregular advance between punches, and it’s not exactly in multiples of 0.100” either, can only be the detent mechanism not doing its job. Perhaps its spring or roller/ball has come off... time to take a close look!
These 33’s really do not like to sit unused for long periods of time. Just like any complex machine (my cars come to mind)... they need to be driven, and lubricated!

Charles,
Check for a loose nut or broken part. Maybe a spring missing. Here are a couple of pics on that might help. But first look for the broken, loose or drive arm may have slipped. Look in the tray below the tape punch.
The punch is a slave to the printer, but the printer can print correctly and the punch be messed up.

While awaiting the moderator, I thought I'd post you directly.
Any thoughts?
thanks

I haven't punched any tape with my 33 for a while. Today I discovered an odd
malfunction.
While punching, every now and then the tape will advance without punching
anything (including the sprocket hole!)
Eventually it will advance more than one location, at which point the tape
buckles inside the mechanism (upstream of the punch pins) and jams.
Here's a pic while it's still punching continuous rubouts but hasn't jammed
up yet:

I originally thought the tape was binding, so I oiled the punch pins and the
roller at the rear of the tape feed trough. Didn't help. Then I realized
even if the tape were binding, the holes would be punched too close
together, not too far apart, and there would still be a sprocket hole
punched too.
The typing unit is showing correctly what should be coming out on the tape
when I send printable characters, and it's not missing a beat (distributor
steadily retriggering). Besides, the punch is mechanically slaved to the
codebars so its levers have to be moving the same as what's typing.
Before I adjust anything (and yes, I have read the manuals), has anyone seen
this before?
I can't figure out what can cause extra feeds without punching.
thanks
Charles
