It is really confusing to many when using sideband transceivers.  Even the direction of the shift is not that important.  Many demodulators have a switch to reverse the tones and if they do not, by switching to the other sideband will in effect reverse the tones.

      I think it can be confusing. I see two things: one is that the only important factor in the _received_ signal is the amount and direction of the shift.  The other is that if a conventional FSK generator, with fixed output frequencies is used those frequencies must pass through the SSB transmitter.  Most transmitters have some limitation on the
