Ah, the days before things like flow control, when we had to use carefully
timed delays (and that was just on video terminals!).

For extra jollies, ask a Young Thing (tm) on which side the carriage 
return lever is on a typewriter...

Warning: you might have to explain what a "typewriter" is as well.

Don't even think of searching for "straight" or "cross-over" cables in 
that case...  Especially with male or female fittings.
