Jim,
All of the keys on the 4x machines I did were covered with that "chalk" and I had to use a series of chemical and abrasive steps to remove it. I managed to get the keys back to the original color and finish and they seem to be holding very well. I think I finished the KB's in Dec of 2014 and then sent them to Wayne for installation into the refinished sub-base(s) - so it's almost a year with no chalk. I imagine that given enough time, the chalk will reappear and need to be addressed. The final step in the restoration was to buff each key with a cloth wheel in a drill press, then I treated each with an automotive "wax" with UV blocking.

I was told once that the white stuff that appears on keytops is not a
fungus, as I had at first assumed, but is a component of the plastic.
Supposedly a heat gun or hair dryer will melt it, but I haven't tried.
