GK's,
Well, this is my penultimate post on the teletype restoration project I
started back in January of 2014. What a trip!
To limit the size of the email I posted only 3 photos, the first is of all
4 restored covers in a long row on my conference room table. The second
photo is a closeup of the '614 cover and the third is a closeup of the '369
cover - that is for the "UMass" machine, the teletype that started the
whole project. It was also the cover in the worst cosmetic condition, so I am
really pleased to have it back to like new after all these years.
The most difficult part of the project was collecting up all the missing
bits and pieces - buttons, covers, springs, spindles, etc. - it seems
Teletype is not making these parts anymore :>).
My question to the group is: If you look closely at the '614 photo (second
photo), you will notice that the color of this cover is different from the
other three. The three others all have the "traditional" tan/gray patina
while the '614 has what I would describe as a "light-olive-gray" color. It
is definitely the original color as I have sampled the inside and all of
the parts (T/R cover, T/P cover,KB, etc.) match perfectly but do not match
the other 3 covers. I am wondering if these machines could be ordered in
different colors? Was "light-olive-gray" an option? If so, is this a rare
color combination?
I have outlined the various methods used to complete the restoration work
in previous posts to the list and will not repeat them here, however, feel
free to email me if you have specific questions and I would be happy to
help you with your own restoration projects.
When the 4x machines are completely assembled I will post some photos -
the last post for this project. I have a lot of little detail work to do,
label restoration, re-install restored platens, restore the copy holders, etc.
The project should conclude in the Jan 2016 timeframe.
Thanks in advance for answering my question(s).
