Absolutely correct, Doug.

Check this advice first.  The carriage should return and stop, no bounce, no bang, no slowing down.

Also, make sure you are typing, punching a tape or programming the computer to generate a CR, then LF to give the carriage time to return.  A DELETE is nice after the LF if possible.  CR, LF, Rubout or Delete.

Also, there's a lever on the vent on the back of the dashpot that
controls how airtight it is.  Opening the vent too far allows the
carriage to slam to the left with a bang.  If the vent is closed
too far, the carriage will take too long to reach the left margin
and the first character you print may be smeared and not solidly
on the margin because it was printed while the carriage was in
motion.
