[GreenKeys] Electronic components...

I've come down to two types of sources, maybe three

For parts I know I will use more then one off, 2N3904/6's I've bought from
Ebay.
Take your time. I got 1,000 2N2904's sealed in a box for $20 and shipping
was
free. If you buy off ebay look far parts still in or attached to automatic
insertion
stuff. A better chance they are not pulled of a circuit board or swept off
the floor.

Resistors and caps came from various sources, but watch where they come
from.
Now that the USA is out of the component business I look for parts from
Japan and
Korea or at least from respectable companies.

Leaded parts are getting harder and harder to get. My assortment of dipped
micas
came from a local company that went out of business, A very good spread of
values, all originally from Mouser.

Someone mentioned Fry's. I don't shop there anymore. I'm about 15 miles
away.

Whet there to get a battery for an old Macintosh I was fixing for a friend,
they had
batteries on the shelf all past their expiation date. And were are talking
10 year
life batteries. On another trip they had a sale on 1/4 watt leaded
resistors, so for
the fun of it I bought one each 5/pack or 100, 1K and 10K suppose to be
5%. Of the total of
then resistors, 3 were close to 10% out of spec. Never opened the 100's. A
friend
took them back, told him to keep the $1 refund. He marked the package,
stuck a label on
it "out of spec" About a month later they were back on the shelf hook.
Label no where in
sight.

Electrolytic's. It is crap shoot unless you buy from an authorized
distributor, Mouser,
Digikey, Allied, TTI, etc etc. And even then I have received an email from
one of
them saying the will replace the caps I ordered, all shipping costs paid
FedEx overnight.
They were fakes.

Fasteners (hardware). Buy a couple boat anchors made before say 1980. Take
them
apart and save all the hardware.

The best quality will be from places like General Radio. They Swiss
screw-machine
all the own fasteners. Next place is some old HP gear.

If you can't do that, go to a respectable seller. If you in the middle of
Nebraska
then buy over the Internet. Even in Portland Oregon, we have a good 5
places.
You pay 2 times as much, or 5 times as much as stuff on Ebay but you will
see the difference.

Well that's my 47 cents
