Hi:
Dave here from the CommCenter-1 Group. Great work on restoring that
AN/FGC-25!!
It is nice to see at least one has survived over the years, especially when
you consider
that the Army alone had thousands of them. I worked in CommCenters during
the
1960s, 70s and 80s, and these were standard-issue machines in
fixed-stations.
There were several ways in which they were employed:
a. as Off Line machines for preparing messages for transmission, or what we
called
the "local repunch" configuration (the patch board inside the TT-178/179
determined
the machine's operational characteristics). When operated in this manner,
it operated
much like your demo indicated.
In this configuration, the AN/FGC-25 could also be operated as a
Half-Duplex
machine.
b. Full-Duplex On Line. Usually this permitted the keyboard and the TD to
be
operating on the Send side, while the printer and perforator worked on the
Receive
side. It was common practice to run both the printer and perforator for
incoming
traffic (we always made tapes of incoming). This was necessary because some
CommCenters had to further relay traffic to tribs.
c. In later years, an during the AUTODIN era, most AN/FGC-25s were heavily
rebuilt
and modified along with heavy TEMPESTing. This included the removal of most
of the electricals inside the TT-178/179s, making the printer's keyboard
inoperative
and essentially turning the 25 into a dumb terminal machine. They also
received
larger motors made by Bendix, and all such modified machines were changed
to
operate at 100 wpm. With all the new mods, they were renomenclatured as
AN/FGC-161s. Such AUTODIN installations were referred to as Mode V
stations.
Hope this helps. Thanks for saving a great machine!
Dave

Hello,
This is my first post so not sure if this will work right. I am responding
to a message (appended after my message below), that was posted about 5
years ago. I hope this will be of interest to someone. I hope
Dave/CommCenter-1 is still around?
In 1977-78 I acquired and restored an AN/FGC-25 teletype set. This past
year I pulled it out of storage and restored it to operation. I recently
posted these demonstration videos;

Subject: Save a Kleinschmidt AN/FGC-25X (ASR teletype)
All:
Some new contact info at Tobyhanna Army Depot, if anyone is
still interested. I had (earlier) queried them about possibly obtaining
a Kleinschmidt AN/FGC-25X teletype machine, since they had recently
unloaded about 40 tons of them for destruction. I was seeking one
for my den as a souvenir or keep sake (i.e. room decoration) if the
price was affordable and if any were still available.
My request has not yet been acted upon but they did send me a survey(!).
There is other contact info in the email in case anyon else wants to
bug them for a machine (or two) before they are all gone. If you will
recall, about 40 tons of new (and used) 25Xs were slated for disposition
to DoD civilian auctioneers (scrappers).
As a matter of interest, few 25Xs have been preserved and even fewer
are in the hands of collectors, compared to Model 28s, 15s, 33s, etc.
Good luck,
Dave
