Another use for the governor controlled motors was to allow machine RPM
to be set independent of power frequency. A synchronous motor is slaved
to the frequency of the power which has to be accurate if the machine
speed is to be accurate. Those old tactical generators used by the
military couldn't maintain an accurate 60 cycle frequency and could be
significantly off.
