Actually 1 bit for the STOP pulse is enough.  Western Union ran all their
machines with 7.00 unit code, 22ms STOP pulse.  Teletype printers get 
along fine with that.  The keyboards did have to be different to
generate the 7.00 unit code.

I don't know about non-Teletype and especially European machines - maybe
they need 1 1/2 units of STOP bit.  The official Teletype, Bell System,
U.S. military etc. code has a 1.42 unit STOP bit for a curious and
archaic reason.
