Drew _Alan_ Kaplan.. ;-)
The catalog was famous for its rambling page-long anecdotes / screeds
intended to pitch the product du jour. As a kid, I always found it a
fascinating read - so much unlike any other sales catalog. Up there with
Spencer Goods or Johnson Smith in terms of entertainment value. Turns out
that Kaplan was a UCLA Psychology major, but never earned a degree. Too
bad, as the dang catalog marketing scheme could well have made for a very
valid master's thesis study.
IIRC, if you bought a Commodore 1600 VICMODEM, it came with a one-hour
trial with The Source and/or Compuserve. Their rates were truly exorbitant,
charging by the +minute+, and that was on top of the long-distance
telephone rates of the early 1980s when the private LD carriers were just
starting to appear. Ultimately, the service wasn't even remotely affordable
for the vast majority of Commodore owners.
